Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, has launched a campaign to replace Mitch McConnell as the Senate’s Republican leader. Unfortunately, Johnston’s observation seems to be accurate.
Cornyn was the primary sponsor of the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) and played a key role in brokering a deal with Senate Democrats. Described by The Texas Tribune as the senator most responsible for guiding the legislation through the Senate, Cornyn was reportedly driven by the goal of preventing another school shooting like the one in Uvalde. However, the final version of the bill failed to address the root of the problem and would not have prevented such an attack.
After the passage of the BSCA, Texas Republicans reacted negatively to the implications of the law and notably booed Cornyn during his speech at the state party convention.
Although Congress later voted to reverse a provision in the law that would have restricted federal funding for schools with hunting or archery programs, the BSCA still introduced measures like universal background checks on all private gun transfers and sales. This move is seen as a step towards creating a national gun registry of law-abiding citizens.
The Biden administration used the BSCA to introduce rules allowing for extensive tracking of gun transactions, potentially leading to a de facto national gun registry. The ATF, under Biden’s direction, pushed for tighter regulations on background checks and increased scrutiny of gun sales.
Despite federal restrictions on establishing a national firearm registry, the Biden administration attempted to implement mechanisms through the BSCA to closely monitor gun transactions and individuals purchasing firearms. This move is part of a broader agenda to regulate gun ownership and create an extensive database of gun owners.
While Biden and the ATF pursue stricter regulations on gun sales, critics argue that these measures could harm law-abiding gun dealers and infringe on citizens’ Second Amendment rights. Cornyn’s involvement in the BSCA has been controversial, as the legislation opened the door to new gun control regulations favored by Democrats.
